I BECAME A USRN AS A CORPER, SELF SPONSORED MY SELF FRESH OUT OF SCHOOL FOR THE NCLEX

I always knew I wanted to practice nursing in the United States from the day I got admitted to study nursing. This is why I wasted no time in getting started with that barely a month after graduation, I would go online and look for resources on how an internationally educated nurse could transition to the states, I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy feat but I was determined to make it at all costs. My journey started last year September with getting the required documents (transcripts and all) to my school and NMCN and sending them back to CGFNS ( an evaluating body ). I made a few mistakes at this stage because I had no one to put me through until I stumbled on someone’s post on nairaland. She had passed the stage where I was and I knew she would be of much help to me, so I sent her a mail and she was really eager to put me through on a lot of things. The major challenge I faced at this stage was the waiting for a positive report from Cgfns and also, there was the fact that I hadn’t gathered enough work experience so what I did was to get a job as soon as I finished my last paper in school. Let’s also not forget the financial side, I had a lot of support from my parents and siblings. They foot all the bills and I also paid for stuff I could afford from my salary. Preparing for Nclex was a major challenge because it’s nothing like what the Nigerian curriculum has prepared us for, I had to challenge myself and constantly remind myself that I was in it to win and I would have nothing short of that. I had to find a schedule that works for me because while waiting and studying, I got mobilized for NYSC, so I knew I couldn’t lose sight of the bigger picture. I used a lot of materials for studying, UWorld, Saunders and Lippincott just to mention a few. I had a lot of help from a particular WhatsApp group called NCLEX REBRANDED GROUP under DECENCY ACADEMY, an exclusive group for nurses planning to get licensed in America. In this group, we study, test ourselves, encourage one another and also get to learn from the experience of people that have written the exam. The group was really useful because we all had a common goal so it wasn’t easy to fall off the wagon. I passed Nclex on the 29th of August 2018 and I was recruited by an agency on the 11th of September. Getting recruited was something that always bothered me because I was scared no agency would want me with the little experience I have, I didn’t let it stop me from sending out my résumé. I scheduled interviews and I was determined to impress them, which I did judging from the feedback mail I got after the interview. I learnt a lot while preparing for Nclex and the one that really stuck is to never lose sight of what you really want, no matter the delays and challenges that may come your way.
